THE BATTLE FOR AUSTRALIA - A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

At the height of the Cold War, Admiral of the Fleet Sergie Gorshkov, the Father of the then mighty Soviet Fleet, was reported to have made an interesting observation: Australia is the centre of the world's oceans.As the Battle for Australia Day approaches, it would seem appropriate to ponder on this remark and to look at the realities of some of the strategic aspects of both WW1, and WW2 - the only conflicts affecting directly the survival of our country as a free, independent democracy.
